5 exercises for a quick toned body

Squat and Shoulder Press

This is a compound move that sculpts your thighs, arms and butts. Stand with your feet, hip-width apart, arms bent and holding weights with palms facing in. Bend your knees and squat, keeping your back straight. Pause for a second and then stand and raise your arms straight up over the shoulders. Make sure your back stays straight and you don’t curve in when you squat.

The weights can be as low as 2 pounds or more than that, depending on your strength. Do 8-12 reps in each set and aim for at least 2-3 sets in a circuit. If you are strength training for the first time, you don’t have to use dumbbells, opt for light wrist weights and once you get strong, go on and grab those dumbbells.

Pull Combo

This is a compound move that not only works your thighs, abs and butt, but it also challenges your core and balance. Stand with feet hip-width apart and arms bent at an angle of 90 degrees. Your left hand should be near the hip, while the right hand should be near your face like a sprinter’s stance. Bend your left knee and move it towards your chest, balancing on your right leg. Slowly lean your torso forward and extend your left leg and arm, keeping them in a straight line. Return to the starting position and pause. Then in one explosive movement, switch arms, bring your left knee towards the chest and rise up onto toes of your right foot. Repeat this movement for 8-12 times on each side. You can bend your supporting leg, until you gain strength.

Crossover Lunge

This is one fun exercise to tone your calves, hamstrings and butts. Stand with arms at shoulder-height, with palms facing downwards. Step forward with your right foot in front of your left leg and perform a curtsy-like lunge, twisting your upper body towards the right. Untwist and return to the starting position.

Remember, when you are lunging forward, your knees should not cross your toes. Always ensure that your back is straight and that you are not leaning forward. This is an exercise that works your core, your balance, your abs, arms and chest. Bend forward, while keeping your legs straight. Put your hands in front of your toes on the floor. Slowly and steadily inch your hands forward, while maintaining a straight back, till you reach the plank position. Once you have reached the plank position, perform one push-up and inch back slowly to the starting position. Perform 8-12 reps in a set and aim to do at least 2-3 sets in your circuit.

Side Plank

We all hate those love handles and no matter what we do, we can’t get rid of them. Side-planks aim to do exactly that, as they work on your abs, your core, your butts, hips, thighs and most importantly, they work on your obliques! Prop yourself on your right forearm, with your elbow positioned just under the shoulder. Your left arm should be on your waist or it can be in front, on the floor, to support you. Your legs should be straight and stacked one over the other. Slowly lift your hips off the floor and hold this position for 15 seconds. Your belly button should be pulled in towards the spine. Lower down to the starting position and repeat the movement on the other side.
